What's bodyLab all about?
bodyLab is a non-for-profit University-based project in which we explore the evolution of human body shapes
and of our ideas of attractiveness. Our judgments and
decisions about attractiveness permeate almost all our social interactions as well as many commercial decisions that
affect our lives. You may have heard of measures like body mass index (BMI) or waist-hip ratio (WHR) and how they
effect attractiveness. bodyLab researchers recognise that there can be much more to human attractiveness than one, or a
small number of measures, can capture and we are trying to understand how all the traits that make up a body combine to
influence attractiveness.
In March 2010 we started with a population of 120 female bodies, and added a similar population of male
bodies shortly after that. We have been refreshing (and propose to continue to refresh) the populations every month,
using the most attractive bodies as “parents” for the next
generation. The bodies are always evolving, so come back each month and see what’s new.
